Reporting Parameters

Deutsche Post World Net is the majority shareholder of Deutsche Postbank AG. The first Sustainability Report of Deutsche Post World Net was published in May 2006 and included Postbank. At that time, Postbank also launched its webpages on sustainability at www.postbank.de/nachhaltigkeit and www.postbank.com/sustainability. These platforms offer detailed information on sustainability at Postbank that goes beyond Deutsche Post World Net’s Sustainability Report.

Sustainability at Deutsche Post World Net

The second Sustainability Report published in June 2008 continues to constitute the central document pertaining to sustainability reporting by Deutsche Post World Net. The above-mentioned sustainability webpages of Postbank were also thoroughly revised at that time. These webpages now include a summary of all actions relating to corporate sustainability at Postbank for the period from January 1, 2006 to June 30, 2008. In the future, annual updates are planned.

During this period covered by the report, we acquired BHW Holding AG plus its subsidiaries, Deutsche Post Retail GmbH (since July 26, 2006: Postbank Filialvertrieb AG) and HVB Payments + Services GmbH (since March 13, 2007: Betriebs Center für Banken Payments + Services GmbH). We sold Modra Pyramida stavebni sporitelna a.s. (Czech Republic), PB Versicherung AG, PB Lebensversicherung AG, BHW Lebensversicherung AG, PB Pensionskasse AG, BHW Pensionskasse AG, and BHW Rückversicherung S.A.

Postbank’s consolidated companies

The information on Postbank’s sustainability webpages generally relates to the Deutsche Postbank AG Group. Any data or statements that pertain to only a part of the company are identified as such.

For the first time, the reports presented on the sustainability webpages of Postbank are based on the guidelines of the Global Reporting Initiative (GRI) G3 plus additional sector-specific criteria (Financial Services Sector Supplement). To allow the reader a quick overview of the respective topic, summaries entitled “Facts and Figures” are presented at the beginning of each section. The information provided refers to the years 2006 and 2007 (as of December 31).

Postbank’s GRI G3 content

Notes on the calculations used for GRI G3:

  • For CO2 emissions resulting from business trips (EN16), Postbank reports the emissions produced by management cars. Due to technical limitations, it is currently not possible to determine the CO2 emissions resulting from all business trips.
  • The data on the consumption of natural resources that is presented under “Employees: Facts and Figures” refers to Postbank’s head office and our 11 operating sites in Germany. These account for approximately 58% of all Postbank Group employees. Data on consumption is calculated as follows:
    • Electricity/heating/air conditioning: Quantities are taken from delivery notes/invoices. CO2 emissions are projected on the basis of kilowatt hours (kWh) and calculation factors (g/kWh CO2).
    • Waste: Quantities are determined by weight (kg/t/m³). The CO2 emission equivalent is calculated on this basis.
    • Paper: Records of quantities purchased (kg/t/m³) are extracted from the purchasing system.
    • Management cars: CO2 emissions are projected on the basis of fuel consumption.
  • No information on water sources (EN9) and the reuse of waste water (EN 10) is available since the municipal utility companies in question do not compile this data on a continuous basis.
  • The business activities of the Postbank branches do not affect the following indicators: EN 11-15, 17, 19-20, 23-25.

Global Reporting Initiative

Postbank does not regard sports sponsoring activities as a “sustained activity,” for which reason these have been deliberately excluded from sustainability reporting.
