Guided tour for security: five rules learnt in ten minutes /Protecting computers, recognizing fraud, testing knowledge
80 percent of banking customers who use online banking do not read the security information provided by their bank. So far, banks have failed to reach the remaining 20 percent of customers with their advice and warnings (source: e-FMDS 2006). In order to remedy this situation, Postbank has added an entertaining learning tour to its information on online security. The guided tour light-heartedly teaches five key rules for safe online banking in ten minutes. This way, it is reaching customers who ignore long warnings on the Internet. Postbank's tour does not require any special software and is suitable for all Internet users.
Five rules learnt in ten minutes
Anyone practicing online banking has to know how to protect their money from phishing and Trojan horses. To achieve this, the tour uses examples to explain five key rules:
- Protecting one’s own computer
- Choosing safe passwords
- Recognizing spoof web sites
- Exposing fraudulent e-mails
- Reacting immediately to conspicuous activity in online banking
The guided tour answers questions that prey on online banker's minds: after all, almost one in two people has received a spoof e-mail supposedly from their own bank in the past. However, only 31 percent of online bankers stated that they knew how to recognize these e-mails straight away. There is also a high level of uncertainty regarding Web sites: one in four people doubts whether they would recognize a spoof Internet site (source: e-FMDS 2006). With its safety tour, Postbank is hoping to close this widespread knowledge gap among online bankers. The knowledge check at the end of the tour shows every customer how good he or she is at distinguishing betweens fakes and originals.
With the guided tour, Postbank is supplementing its safety information and further expanding its safety concept. Postbank's measures against phishing and Trojan horses include indexed and mobile TANs (iTAN and mTAN), its transfer limit on the Internet and the Postbank mail signature, which makes it easier to detect spoof e-mails.
